Student Placements

Enhance your skills and experience through a placement with Ulster Wildlife

We have a number of full and part-time positions available across our teams for those currently studying conservation, the environment, and community engagement.  With dedicated one to one support and supervision, working alongside our teams will afford you the opportunity to network with key contacts, learn new skills, receive important on the job training and develop transferrable skills to aid your progression into employment after your studies.

Marine Recovery Student Placement

The placement will give you the opportunity to work with the Marine Recovery Team in Northern Ireland’s largest local nature conservation charity. You will also have the chance to gain valuable experience with our marine projects including the Native Oyster Nursery Network, the NI Marine Task Force and more.

Priority Species

You'll assist with the Let Nature In campaign to raise awareness of gardens' role in nature's recovery. You'll also support conservation projects for species like red squirrels, pine martens, barn owls, and hedgehogs, including tasks such as surveys, data processing, nest box installation, pellet dissection, farm visits, event support, and content creation.

Nature Reserves Assistant

In this role you will support the Nature Reserves Team in a range of hands-on practical and office-based conservation activities and techniques. Split between desk based work and practical activities on our reserves, you'll gain experience in grassland, peatland and woodland management, invasive species control, access, safety works and more.

Community Engagement Assistant- Bog Meadows Nature Reserve

The placement student will assist in delivering youth and community activities at Bog Meadows Nature Reserve, working alongside Ulster Wildlife project officers. You'll support the Community Engagement Team with hands-on conservation tasks and some office work for planning and preparation.

Peatlands Research Project

We're seeking an MSc student to research Peatland restoration, comparing historical Ordnance Survey maps with recent aerial imagery to assess changes in peatland and wetland extent. The project will focus on the Carrickmore Plateau in Tyrone, specifically the Creggan townland, which includes peatland, farmland, and forestry.

NI Marine Task Force

The placement offers the opportunity to work with the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force Officer, supporting marine policy and conservation efforts for local seas. You’ll gain valuable experience working on marine projects with member organisations such as the Native Oyster Nursery Network, RSPB Reserves, National Trust sites, and WWT Castle Espie.
