Peatlands Bird Surveying

Purpose of role:
The south Sperrins is one of the most significant areas of peatland habitat in NI and as a result is an important landscape for key bird species such as snipe, curlew, hen harrier and red grouse but also other peatland species such as Irish hare and large heath butterfly. This will help us build up an picture of how these species are doing in this key area. It can also help us target peatland restoration activity which will bring benefits for these important species.
Main responsibilities:
• Surveying priority bird species on key peatland sites
• Recording other priority peatland species on key sites
• Record key site features including drainage channels, bare peat, peat haggs etc
Skills required:
• Knowledge of Irelands bird species
• Motivated and able to work without supervision, well organised.
• Passionate about nature conservation.
• Willingness to learn.
• Use of a car/driving licence.
Desirable skills:
• Ability to identify bird species in the field through calls and song
Role duration: Ongoing but with peak activity in spring and summer
