The report entitled ‘Blue Carbon Habitat Restoration in Northern Ireland Feasibility Study’, developed in partnership with the National Oceanography Centre and the University of Hull, identifies what, where, and how much local coastal marine habitats, such as kelp forests, saltmarsh, seagrass meadows and shellfish, can remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – these habitats are known as ‘blue carbon’.
The report comes at a critical time for our seas. In Northern Ireland we are failing to meet 11 of 15 indicators for Good Environmental Status, 95% of our inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are not favourably managed, and as our seas become busier we are still without an implemented Marine Plan. Furthermore, as Northern Ireland prepares its first Climate Change Bill and Environment Strategy there is a unique opportunity to ensure nature-based solutions, specifically blue-carbon, are pursued.
