This collaboration, now launched after yesterday’s World Wildlife Day, marks another significant step from Power NI towards promoting environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation in the region.
For the past two years, Power NI has supported Ulster Wildlife’s peatlands protection projects, not only through financial support, but also helping the charity raise public awareness about the importance of peatlands and their part to play in carbon reduction. Over the 24 months of the partnership, Power NI has helped fund the repair of 200 bog dams, vital in helping to keep the bogs wet, as well as paying for species surveys, trail cameras and fence posts. Power NI staff have also given a helping hand through practical volunteering on our local bogs such as removing invasive saplings that dry out the peatlands.
Vickie Chambers, Head of Fundraising & Communications at Ulster Wildlife, says: “At Ulster Wildlife, we envision a wilder future where people and nature are thriving together. Wildlife is declining at an alarming rate, and Northern Ireland is now ranked as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world with 12% of species threatened with extinction. It’s so important that we look after our wild places and give nature and wildlife a chance of recovery.
“We are delighted to renew our partnership with Power NI following a successful two-year collaboration restoring vital peatland habitats across Northern Ireland. Our new partnership will focus on the conservation of our native species; the barn owl, the red squirrel and the hedgehog. We are thankful for Power NI’s help and support in not only financially contributing to our work, but also helping to raise public awareness about the importance of keeping an eye on our native species by recording sightings and knowing what to do if you spot them.”
Amy Bennington, Power NI’s Marketing Manager, also comments: “Through this partnership, Power NI is committed to supporting Ulster Wildlife's vital conservation efforts, protecting these iconic species and safeguarding Northern Ireland's native wildlife for generations to come. As Northern Ireland’s leading energy supplier, we are dedicated to playing our part in creating a sustainable future for all and making a positive impact in our communities and on our planet.”
“We look forward to supporting Ulster Wildlife’s conservation projects and engaging more people in protecting our precious wildlife here."
